Before You Size Up, Measure Your Favorite Hoodie
Your usual size can still give you the wrong silhouette. Before you size up for more room, check the hoodie you already reach for.
That piece holds useful information: how much space you like through the chest, where the hem lands and whether the sleeves get in your way. Start there instead of guessing from a letter on a tag.
Choose your reference
Pick a hoodie that fits the way you want this one to fit. If you want an everyday layer, use your everyday favorite. If you want extra room over a T-shirt, choose a reference that already gives you that space.
Empty the pocket. Lay the hoodie on a flat surface and smooth it gently without pulling the fabric. Keep the front and back aligned. A stretched-out measurement is a poor starting point.
First: check chest width
Measure straight across the garment from one side to the other at the chest. Keep the tape flat and level. Write down the width and the unit you used.
This is garment width, not your body circumference. Those numbers describe different things. Compare your flat hoodie measurement with the chest-width column in WYSE’s Size & Fit guide, using inches for both.
If your favorite hoodie feels tight through the chest, record that too. A number is more useful when you remember how the reference actually feels.
Second: check body length
Measure from the high shoulder beside the collar down to the bottom hem. Do not include the hood. Then look at where that same hoodie sits when you wear it with your usual pants.
A little more width and a little more length can change an outfit in different ways. Choosing a larger size affects both. Compare both columns before deciding that sizing up is the answer.
For sleeves, WYSE’s guide uses a center-back measurement: start at the back of the collar, go over the shoulder and follow the sleeve to the cuff. Use that method when comparing sleeve length.
Put the numbers beside the design
The Built Different Graphic Hoodie has a classic unisex fit and a standard-length body. The current adult range is S–3XL; adult sizing is not youth sizing. Availability varies by color and size, and the guide notes that individual garment measurements may vary by up to two inches.
The original multicolor WYSE mark sits on the upper chest. BUILT DIFFERENT. THINK BIGGER. carries the back. The hood and sleeves stay plain, and the hood interior follows the body color.
Orange makes the artwork part of a brighter outfit. Black or Navy gives you a darker starting point. Whichever direction you choose, check the measurements before the color makes the whole decision for you.
Keep your reference measurements in a phone note. Next time, you can start with what you know about your own clothes. No size label can make that choice for you.
